Frequently asked questions

How long is annual leave in Uzbekistan?

At least 21 calendar days — Article 217 of the Labour Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Employees under 18 and employees with a group I or II disability get 30 calendar days. Employees of state authority and national executive bodies, teachers and some other categories have longer leave set by law, and an employment or collective agreement may grant more — write the length that applies to you (source: lex.uz, Labour Code arts. 217, 218).

What if a public holiday falls within my leave?

It is not counted, and the leave runs one day longer for each one. Article 221 of the Labour Code: non-working public holidays that fall within annual leave are not counted when determining its length. The holidays are listed in Article 208: 1 January, 8 March, 21 March, 9 May, 1 September, 1 October, 8 December, and the first day of Eid al-Fitr and of Eid al-Adha. Extra days off moved by presidential decree are not holidays and do count toward the leave. This tool counts the end date by exactly this rule.

Can I split my leave?

Yes, by agreement with the employer. Under Article 231 of the Labour Code, when leave is split one of the parts must be at least 14 calendar days. So 21 days can be taken as 14 + 7, but not as 7 + 7 + 7. Each part usually gets its own application.

What if I have worked there less than six months?

The right to leave for the first working year arises after six months of continuous work with that employer (Labour Code art. 227). The parties may agree to grant it earlier. Employees under 18, employees with a group I or II disability, working students (to match their exams) and the other categories listed in Article 227 are granted it at their request before six months.

How do I take unpaid leave?

By written application, by agreement with the employer — this is "leave without pay" (Labour Code art. 241). Its length is agreed, but must not exceed three months in total within any twelve-month period; during quarantine or a state of emergency the ceiling rises to six months. Some categories are entitled to it (art. 242): for example, employees with a group I or II disability, and one parent raising two or more children under twelve (or a child with a disability under sixteen) — up to 14 calendar days a year; and also to one parent, guardian, grandparent or other relative actually caring for a child aged two to three. Choose this type and you can add a reason to the application.
